The Florida Writers Association (FWA) is an example of a geographically-based organization for writers. Its mission is to help authors and aspiring writers in Florida and beyond to learn, grow, network, and find resources to cultivate their inner muse, improve their writing, and navigate the publishing industry. Its motto is “Writers Helping Writers.”
Membership
My membership in FWA started in mid-November 2019. I joined for three years at a cost of $124. A one-year membership costs $59, so the multi-year option was most cost effective. I joined this organization to connect with other writers. This organization has over 1,300 members.
Benefits
FWA membership benefits are HERE. Members pay lower rates for conferences and webinars. Membership includes participation in the FWA Network for social networking with fellow writers. There are also annual award competitions, and many more opportunities for connecting with other writers.
Chapters
FWA has more than fifty local writers groups. Unfortunately, none are in my immediate vicinity, but a number are within a reasonable driving distance. Local groups include critiquing opportunities. Dates and times of local meetings vary, so I may try several different local groups to determine which location fits best with my genre and writing interests.
Conferences
The annual FWA Conference was held in October 2019. As of this writing, the 2020 dates are not published. The 2019 conference was a multiple day series of over 70 workshops and panel discussions. Many years ago I attended the FWA Conference when it was held at a Disney resort in Orlando and found it very motivational.
Publications
Members receive a subscription to the The Florida Writer magazine and the monthly FWA eNews. The Florida Writer is produced six times a year. Past issues are available on-line for members. Issues I reviewed were informative and professional. One could spend hours digging into the content of past issues! If nothing else, these resources justify the membership.
This post ties to Networking: Writer’s Organizations.
Another informative message of connecting with other writers. Thank you for sharing.
I was surprised that there wasn’t a Brooksville FWA writers group.
